County Executive Marc Elrich commented on school board issues ahead of the County Council’s joint oversight committee meeting hearing with the inspector general Thursday.
During his weekly media briefing, Elrich discussed the lack of staff the school board has to look into complaints. He also discussed the need for transparency from the school board and the recently appointed interim superintendent Dr. Monique Felder.
“There are a lot of questions for which no answer has been provided,” said Elrich.
In the hearing later today, council members will be able to ask Inspector General Megan Limarzi about her office’s investigations into the school system’s handling of misconduct allegations.
The investigations are related to Joel Beidleman’s promotion to principal of Paint Branch High School despite complaints of sexual harassment and bullying against him.
“Beidleman wasn’t the only potential case that should have had more attention,” said Elrich. “If the superintendent has the authority to do that, she just ought to require that all the public information be released”
Elrich went on to discuss the possibility of providing more resources to the board.
“We need to think long and hard about giving the board the (necessary) tools, and considering making these full-time jobs”
The hearing is at 3 p.m Thursday.
