Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the county supports a number of bills at the state level backed by Gov. Wes Moore, including legislation regarding abortion announced this week.
“This is an effort I greatly support, but I am saddened that we live in a day and age — like civil rights problems — that we have to legislatively fight for the due right of women to have the right to choose against another horrible Supreme Court decision last year involving the Dobbs ruling,” Elrich said during a media briefing Thursday.
“So, we’re glad that the state’s a partner in this and is going to support putting this into the Constitution of the state so that it cannot be eroded by people who do not respect women’s rights.”
That morning, Moore, Lt. Governor Aruna Miller and legislators announced a reproductive rights bill package to protect freedoms. The package includes four core bills and Moore said he will sign them.
Last June, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion case.
In September, Elrich announced the availability of $1 million in grants to abortion providers and organizations that support them.
Also Thursday, Elrich expressed support for legislation regarding a service year option for high school graduates, the Clean Transportation and Energy Act, and broadband expansion.
