County Executive Marc Elrich called for “continued careful balance” in reducing the spread of COVID-19. In a statement released Thursday, Elrich pointed to Gov. Larry Hogan’s announcement that as of March 12, he would end many of the restrictions and capacity limits that have been in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.
“It almost felt as though spring fever clouded some good judgement,” Elrich said of the state’s decision to relax restrictions.
“[T]his is not a time to throw caution to the wind,” he declared, adding that he supports increased reopening as long as it is “done deliberatively and carefully.” Therefore, he wrote, “I am not inclined to follow the guidance of the Governor’s newly appointed health advisor, who was an integral part of the Trump Administration’s COVID response team.”
According to Elrich, “only about 20 percent of our population is vaccinated” and “our case count is still significantly higher than it was this past summer.”
Elrich urged residents to stay vigilant, wear masks and get vaccinated.
