Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich nominated Assistant Police Chief Marc Yamada as his choice to fill in after Chief Marcus Jones retires July 1.
Yamada must be confirmed by county council before he can take over the department. If approved, Yamada will be the first Japanese American to serve as police chief. He has spent 35 years with the police department.
According to a press release from Elrich, Yamada has demonstrated “exceptional leadership, dedication, passion and a deep commitment to community safety.”
He has overseen the Field Services Bureau and served as the Fourth District (Wheaton area) commander, captain for the Community Engagement Division and a duty commander among his many assignments.
Elrich will make his nomination official Wednesday at Public Safety Headquarters in Gaithersburg.
Join me tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the Public Safety Headquarters as I nominate Assistant Chief Marc Yamada for Police Chief of @mcpnews. With 35 years of service, his leadership will continue to ensure our community's safety.
