As the delta variant sweeps the nation, local leaders are concerned about the recent uptick in COVID-19 case rates. County officials project that the trend will continue as more cases are expected within the next few days.
“We have a remarkable number of people vaccinated, but even with that, delta is finding a way to spread and we do have this large unvaccinated population under 12 and we’ve got over 100,000 adults who are not willing to get the vaccination yet,” said Elrich during his weekly virtual media briefing on Wednesday.
Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, on Thursday, Montgomery County Council will vote on recommendations surrounding face-covering requirements if the county’s transmission status increases.
Although data shows that Montgomery County currently has a “moderate transmission” rate, Elrich says 90% of the entire nation’s population is experiencing “substantial transmission” rates, including neighboring jurisdictions.
Elrich and county deputy health officer Dr. James Bridgers explain local case rates’ current status and what trends will trigger a change in face mask guidance.
“Everything we’re doing is to prevent shutting down things, it’s not leading to shutting down things… we know that the vaccine makes a difference in how this virus will spread, so if you’re on the fence and thinking about it, please get off the fence and get vaccinated,” added Elrich
