Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said he was shocked and outraged by a leaked Supreme Court draft that indicated the court would overturn the landmark abortion case of Roe v. Wade.
“A bunch of men have no right to impose their religious views and tell women what to do with their bodies,” Elrich said during a media briefing Wednesday.
Maryland lawmakers weighed in on the draft leak this week.
Elrich said while abortion rights are protected in Maryland, he is concerned about what would happen to federal funding for programs that provide abortions to those who do not have the economic means to get them. He worries federal funding for abortion healthcare would be eroded.
“We would not be able to make it up at the state and local levels,” he said.
He called the potential move a “complete regression.”
“You would never be able to get away with this stuff with men, and the idea that you can get away with it with women is just, in my mind, outrageous,” Elrich said.
