County Executive Marc Elrich announced at a news conference Thursday that Montgomery County will hire an outside consultant to conduct a full review of the police department.
Elrich says the consultant will serve as an independent task force that could launch as soon as Aug. 1 and will do a “top to bottom review” of MCPD to help the county reimagine policing. In addition to looking at MCPD data and policies, it will also examine how money is used in the department and make recommendations about whether there is work currently performed by the police that could be better served by other agencies.
Here’s what Elrich had to say about the task force:
The task force is supported by Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones, Montgomery County’s Fraternal Order of Police President Torrie Cooke, and County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Raymond Crowel.
Elrich says the task force is expected to share its findings with the county council’s police advisory commission sometime in January 2021.
