County Executive Marc Elrich returned from a trip to Taiwan, where he represented the county during an international conference and worked to bring companies here for the second consecutive year.
He was in Taiwan for the 2024 Smart City Summit & Expo and, like during his visit last year, he expanded the trip to be an economic development opportunity as well. He was joined by County Council Vice President Kate Stewart, County Environmental Protection Director Jon Monger, and Judy Costello, Special Projects Manager with the County Executive’s office.
Elrich told MCM on Wednesday that leaders had conversations with a chip producer and with solar companies. For example, one company is using a new form of solar panel, and he told them they could consider Montgomery County as a prototype site for the American market. Leaders also talked with two universities that are interested in taking space in the future Institute for Health Computing in North Bethesda.
During a media briefing Thursday, Costello said a couple of prospects who came to learn about Montgomery County last year returned this year and said they want to learn more and are interested in moving forward with opening in the county.
And on Thursday county officials met with a cyber security company at the Rockville Innovation Center that they first met in Taiwan last year.
Elrich’s first international economic mission as county executive was his trip to Taiwan last year for the conference and for business recruitment, and last fall, he traveled to India and Vietnam for a two-week economic trade mission.
