After the owners of White’s Ferry offered to donate the ferry and its operation to Montgomery County in an effort to resume service, County Executive Marc Elrich forecasts it will still take about a year to get it operational.
Fair Access Committee Chair Link Hoewing told MCM that after many announcements and more than three years with no ferry service, people in the area are cautious about new any announcement.
Hoewing said Elrich’s statement the same day of the announcement shows a sense of urgency he hopes Loudoun County shares.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the owners of White’s Ferry put out a formal offer to donate the ferry and its operation to the county in an effort to resume service. Last year, ferry owners even pursued selling the land and operation to the county.
The Ferry has been shut down since December 2020 — after more than 230 years of operation — over a legal dispute between the ferry operator and Rockland Farm, on the Virginia side of the ferry operation.
Since 1786, the ferry had taken travelers across the Potomac River between Poolesville and Loudoun County, Virginia.
