The Executive Office Building on Monroe Street in Rockville will be renamed after former County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett, Council President Andrew Friedson announced Monday.
“Throughout his 28 years as county executive, council president and councilmember, Ike guided us with a steady hand through the most devastating financial crisis in our history, and forged a path for others to follow as a trailblazer who rose from poverty to the highest levels of government, law, and academia,” Friedson said during a media briefing Monday.
In 1986, Leggett was the first African American elected to the county council. In 2006, he became the first African American county executive. He served three terms as county executive.
Friedson said the renaming is the result of a recommendation he made with support from all councilmembers. It led to an executive order signed by County Executive Marc Elrich.
A ceremony will take place in February 2025 during Black History Month — “a fitting and symbolic time to make this very important recognition,” Friedson said.
