Last week, the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles (MVA) issued its interactive dashboard which tracks fatal car crashes throughout the state and updates constantly as new information becomes available.
To see how Montgomery County registered when it came to fatal car crashes, MyMCM worked with the new Google AI Bard to get statistics for the year 2022. Here’s what we found out:
- There were 62 fatal crashes in 2022 resulting in 63 deaths
- 53% of fatal crashes occurred on urban roads; 47% occurred on rural roads
- More crashes occurred between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. (31%). The other highest time period was between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. (26%)
- Saturday was the most dangerous day for fatal car crashes
- Passenger cars were involved in 52% of the crashes, followed by trucks at 22% and motorcycles at 12%
- The most common contributing factors to fatal car crashes were speeding (29%), driving impairment (23%) and distracted driving (18%)
For the first quarter of 2023:
- As of March 8, there have been 15 car crashes resulting in 16 deaths
- Most of the victims were male (12) with an average age of 35
- The time of day and day of the week findings resembled those of 2022
- The most common factor in 2023’s statistics so far is speeding
These AI generated statistics may not match those of the MVA’s dashboard when it comes to crash numbers. The MVA dashboard offers the following disclaimer:
There is no guarantee or representation to the user as to the accuracy, currency, suitability, or reliability of this data for any purpose. The user accepts the data “as is.” This information is prepared for the purpose of identifying, evaluating, and planning safety improvements on public roads…”
Statistics of fatal car crashes are gathered to raise awareness and to help drivers make better decisions before and after getting behind the wheel.
