Friday, February 2
BHM24 Friday Night Dance Series: The Maryland Youth Ballet hosts numerous evens during February to observe Black History Month. On Friday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. youth ages 10 and up may participate in a complementary African dance lesson. The lesson tonight is an African dance technique known as Umfundalai. Remembering Then and Now Exhibit: This Black History Exhibit spotlights the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout American history. The exhibit is on display in the Activity Center at Bohrer Park lobby through Feb. 29. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday – Sunday, 8 a.m. – p.m. The center is located at 508 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg. For more information, click here.
Art Exhibit: Artists & Makers Studios hosts Laurie Breen and her solo exhibit “lost and found” from now through Feb. 21. The exhibit’s opening reception takes place Friday, Feb. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. Laurie Breen is a mixed media painter with a studio at the Gateway Arts Center in Brentwood, Maryland. Breen has been painting, exhibiting and selling her work for over twenty years and is a three-time recipient of the Individual Artist Grant from the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: The county’s African American Health Program commemorates National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Wheaton Recreation Center from 1:30 to 4 p.m. There will be information on prevention, testing, and treatment. Ice Skating: The Silver Spring Ice Skating outdoor rink is open seven days a week. The rink has skates, sized from toddler to adult, available for rent. The Ice Skating Rink offers skating sessions with online reservations and ticket purchasing. Reservations are available two weeks in advance and staggered every five minutes. Junie B. Jones, The Musical: Presented by Adventure Theatre at Glen Echo Park this musical follows the fictional character Junie B. on her first day of first grade. The show runs through March 30. Sunday, February 4
Kid Museum Black History Month Celebration: Explore the fascinating heritage of Nigeria through traditional regalia and hands-on making with cowry shells; join storytelling and art-making activities fit for royalty; and, engage with talented STEM makers and more while enjoying a fun-filled day with your family. The Kid Museum is open Sunday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 3 Bethesda Metro Center, Suite 140. Cost is $15. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
Families Outside: At the Croydon Creek Nature Center in Rockville, parents and children at least 3 years old are invited to spend time outside exploring animal habitats. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6. Register here for the Animal Signs class under the Families Outside series.
Oasis Art Gallery Exhibit and Meet the Artists Reception: Montgomery Art Association presents an art exhibit at the Oasis Art Gallery from now through April 19. Sunday meet the artists at a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. This is a mixed media exhibit.
