Welcome to MCM’s Weekend Roundup of entertainment in Montgomery County. Here are 9 things to do this weekend, Feb. 23-25.

Friday, February 23

Ice Skating: Cabin John Ice Rink is one of two indoor skating facilities in Montgomery Parks. Public skating sessions are open seven days a week during the winter, find the full schedule here. Also, ice skating and ice hockey classes and camps are offered for all ages and skill levels. The rink is located at 10610 Westlake Drive in Rockville. General admission fees start at $5. Cultural Heritage Concert Series: The county hosts a series of four concerts during February to celebrate Black History Month. Today’s concert takes place at the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville at 6:30 p.m. Performing Artists: Spice Cake and Munit Mesfin. Free and appropriate for all ages. BHM24 Friday Night Dance Series: The Maryland Youth Ballet hosts numerous events during February to observe Black History Month. On Friday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. youth ages 10 and up may participate in a complimentary African dance lesson. The lesson tonight includes song, dance and live drumming taught by Jalia Inman. Saturday, February 24

Grand Opening: The Department of Recreation celebrates the opening of the new Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. The facility, located at 1319 Apple Ave., is part of a public-private partnership between the Housing Opportunity Commission and Lee Development Group, and has been under construction since 2019.

Scotland Annual Black History Event: Learn about the history of the Scotland community through a museum style exhibit Saturday, Feb. 24 from 3-6 p.m. Activities include special guest presentations, storytelling, books, arts and crafts. The event is free and takes place at the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center, located at 7700 Scotland Drive in Potomac. For more information, click here.

MCM toured the exhibit during the first Scotland Black history event in 2022. Scotland is one of the county’s earliest African American communities.

Black History Month Family Day: Reverend Josiah Henson worked tirelessly throughout his life to advocate for freedom and education. This weekend, visit the Josiah Henson Museum and Park for educational, hands-on activities that demonstrate what a child’s life was like in Dawn, the settlement Henson created after taking his family to Canada via the Underground Railroad. The event is appropriate for all ages. Free with paid admission to the museum ($4 for children and seniors, and $5 for adults).  The museum and park are located at 11410 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda. Sunday, February 25

Family Storytime : A storytime experience for preschool age children and their adults on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Rockville Memorial Library.The session is designed to introduce children to the culture of reading with books, songs, rhymes and fun activities. Black History Live with Culture Queen: Germantown Library presents this performance for children kindergarten age and younger and their adults Sunday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. Children will enjoy the live, original and interactive music, movement and storytelling to celebrate the Kings and Queens of African-American History. Kids Crafts – Chinese New Year Dragon Masks: Kids create Chinese Year of the Dragon Masks out of paper plates, construction paper, and tissue paper. Appropriate for elementary school age children. The free, drop-in event takes place at Aspen Hill Library, Sunday, Feb. 25 from noon to 2 p.m. The library is located at 4407 Aspen Hill Road in Rockville. For more information, click here.
