Friday, February 9
BHM24 Friday Night Dance Series: The Maryland Youth Ballet hosts numerous events during February to observe Black History Month. On Friday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. youth ages 10 and up may participate in a complementary African dance lesson. The lesson tonight focuses on the Dunham Technique which combines the dance movements of Caribbean and African cultures with European-style ballet. Valentine’s Day Family Ice Skating Night: Montgomery Recreation hosts this family Valentine’s Day event in Silver Spring Friday, Feb 9 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. There will be ice skating, games, music, and snacks. Glow in the Dark Kickball and Ztag: Montgomery County Recreation hosts this game of kickball for kids ages 10-13 Friday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ross Boddy Neighborhood Recreation Center. Teams will play with a ball that glows in the dark. Free, but registration is requested. The center is located at 18529 Brooke Road in Sandy Spring. Saturday, February 10
Black History Month Family Day: Families enjoy the day with hands-on activities celebrating African American heritage and accomplishments. After building a compass, families may follow the path of Harriet Tubman at the Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park. The drop-in event is free and takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. Tasty Books Features Hidden Figures: The Tasty Books series features Hidden Figures Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 2 to 8 listen to the story of four African-American women mathematicians and the work they did at NASA from the 1940s to the 1960s read aloud and then explore hands-on crafts and snacks. The event takes place at the Casey Community Center. Adult supervision required. Individual tickets need to be purchased for each child and adult. Tickets cost $5. Dancing Our Way Through Books: This is the ninth season of InterAct’s public performing arts series for kids and families. InterAct Story Theatre’s teaching artist Kelly King leads kids and adults in exploring a favorite folk tale together through movement, drama, and song. Worlshops are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at Highland Elementary School in Wheaton. Free, no tickets or registration required. For more information, click here.
Rec ‘N Resources: Montgomery Recreation hosts this event Sunday, Feb. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. for families to learn about services available in the county.
