Firefighter Struck, Injured in Suspected DUI Crash on Beltway

According to police, a driver went through a lane closure and struck two unoccupied patrol vehicles and a county firefighter.

A firefighter was struck and injured in a suspected DUI crash early Friday on the beltway, according to Maryland State Police (MSP).

At about 2:40 a.m., first responders went to the scene of a separate crash on the I-495 inner loop near University Boulevard in Silver Spring, according to MSP. Several lanes were closed and blocked off.

Then at about 3 a.m., a driver in a BMW sedan came through the lane closure and struck two unoccupied patrol vehicles and a county firefighter.

The firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, according to police. There were no other reported injuries. Alberto Zurita, 45, was the driver of the BMW and was arrested for suspected DUI, according to police.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, according to police.
