President Donald Trump has ordered the United States flag to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 15 for Peace Officers Memorial Day. Also on Friday, the White House will be lit in blue.
As a matter of protocol, the Maryland flag is lowered to half-staff. No flag may fly higher than the United States flag.
Every year, by a 1962 resolution, the president has the authorization to request May 15 as “Peace Officers Memorial Day.”
The President’s proclamation begins:
“On Peace Officers Memorial Day and during Police Week, we commend the brave men and women of our law enforcement community for continually summoning the courage to fulfill their solemn oath to protect and serve. We also pause to remember all those who have lost their lives and who have suffered permanent disabilities defending their communities and the rule of law, including the heroes we have lost this year to the coronavirus.”
