Montgomery County has installed 35 new flood sensors.
The sensors will serve as an early warning system that can track rising water and alert authorities so the public can be notified depending on severity, leaders said Friday at Burnt Mills Dam in Silver Spring.
Leaders first announced the sensors were being installed last June. One is located at the Rock Creek Woods Apartments, where a 19-year-old died in a flooding in 2021.
According to the county, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security provided the sensors at no cost as part of a national pilot program.
April is Maryland Flood Awareness Month, according to the county.
