Montgomery College received email threats from a former student Friday afternoon and decided to close down while police investigate.
“Out of an abundance of caution,” the college campuses were closed at 1:30 p.m. Friday. All onsite and remote operations, instruction, and services were suspended. Students and staff were advised to check their college email for updates.
By around 2:10 p.m., nothing credible had been determined, according to a person in the Rockville campus’ public safety office.
In an email, Marcus Rosano, the college’s director of media and public relations, said, “Montgomery made the difficult but necessary decision to close all locations under Code Red today, Friday, October 11, following emailed threats received from a former student. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader MC community is, and will always be, our first priority.”
College officials immediately contacted local law enforcement, “who are actively investigating the situation.”
Rosano added, “Montgomery College is fully cooperating with law enforcement to resolve this matter as swiftly as possible. In the meantime, we will continue to provide further updates regarding College reopenings as soon as more information becomes available.”
