For Second Straight Year, a Maryland Native Instrumental in UConn’s Championship Run

Cam Spencer, a native of Davidsonville, became the state of Maryland’s most recent NCAA men’s basketball champion Monday night. The Huskies defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 75-60 Monday in Glendale, Az.

Just like Gaithersburg’s Jordan Hawkins last year, Spencer cut down the nets alongside his University of Connecticut teammates.

Spencer, who originally attended Loyola before transferring to Rutgers for one season, picked head coach Dan Hurley’s Connecticut program for his fifth year.

Spencer averaged 14.3 points per game on the year, including 44% from three-point range. His performance during UConn’s run in the tournament did not waver, as he averaged 13.3 points and seven rebounds, notching a double-double in the Huskies’ Elite Eight matchup versus 3-seeded Illinois.

Connecticut is the first men’s college basketball team to win back-to-back championships since Florida did it in the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

Spencer, 24, attended Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore, winning Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Year honors as a senior after averaging 25 points, seven rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.
