Luther Reynolds, a former assistant police chief with the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) from 2013 to 2018, has died.
Reynolds, who was 56, died after a battle with cancer, according to a statement from the Mayor of Charleston, South Carolina on Monday.
He was appointed chief of the Charleston Police Department in 2018, according to the city’s website after serving MCPD since 1988.
“Chief Reynolds proudly served the MCPD & the citizens of Montgomery County for more than thirty years,” MCPD wrote on Twitter.
“He’ll be forever missed by his friends across the government and our community,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich stated on Twitter.
Last week, Reynolds released an open letter stating he decided to end his cancer treatments and enter hospice care.
“Now, as I set out on the final journey that God has planned for me, I’m thankful that I will be able to spend these days in the city I’ve come to love, surrounded by family and friends. It is the last great gift in a life that’s been full of them,” Reynolds wrote.
