A former Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) teacher was sentenced Friday to serve 12 months in prison for sex offenses against a student while she was a teacher.
Melissa Curtis, 32, of Upper Marlboro, was sentenced to 30 years with all but 12 months suspended, plus five years of probation after release, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).
Once released, Curtis will have to register as a sex offender for 25 years. As a condition of probation, she cannot have unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children, according to MCSAO.
She pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense this year.
According to police at the time of her arrest last year, an investigation began last year into allegations of sexual abuse. A man alleged he engaged in sexual acts with Curtis when he was a minor.
The abuse allegedly started in 2015 when Curtis was 22, according to police. It continued for months while the victim attended Montgomery Village Middle School, where Curtis taught. According to MCSAO, the 14-year-old victim volunteered for an after-school program that Curtis ran and they were often alone together.
According to police, Curtis had been a teacher for about two years in the county and also taught at Lakelands Park Middle School in Gaithersburg.
