Free Celebration, Donation Drive at Strathmore Honors Dr. Martin Luther King’s Legacy

Montgomery County will host its free annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.
This year’s theme, “A View from the Bridge: Injustice, Resistance and Hope,” will explore key civil rights moments symbolized by iconic bridges. The celebration will honor Dr. King’s legacy through music, storytelling, and performances by local and national talent.

Scheduled performers include Spur of the Moment, Daryl Davis, Shirleta Settles, Iziz la Enfermera de la Salsa, Concert Chorale of Washington, Miss Chief Rocka, Akhmedova Ballet Academy, and John Sellman Jr.

The event is free, but tickets are required. Visit the Music Center at Strathmore website for ticket information.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to advancing justice, equality and opportunity for all people,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “This year’s event provides an opportunity to reflect on our progress and the work ahead. I invite everyone to join us in honoring Dr. King’s vision through inspiring performances and storytelling.”

The Music Center at Strathmore is located at 5301 Tuckerman Lane in North Bethesda. Free parking is available in the adjacent garage.

Montgomery County will also host a Day of Service in partnership with Interfaith Works. The “Fill A Truck” initiative will collect toiletry items for homeless shelters. Organizers encourage community members and event attendees to donate portable shower caddies, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, lotion, lip balm, travel-size shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, washcloths, towels, gloves, and socks.

Drop off donations at the Music Center at Strathmore between 3:30 and 5 p.m. on Jan. 19.
