Friday is world car free day. In support, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced it is also fare free day.
All Ride On buses will waive the $1 fare. Maryland Transit Authority is offering free fare throughout the weekend. However, Metrobus will charge regular fares.
The goal of car free day is to get people to bike, walk or use public transportation.
“We hope residents will take advantage of the free fare and try out Montgomery County’s public transportation system,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “By choosing to take a bus, ride a bike or walk instead of driving to their destinations, residents can enjoy the benefits of exercise while also reducing road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.”
Those who go car free can sign a pledge online and be entered into a raffle for prizes such as gift cards, an annual Capital Bikeshare membership and a pre-funded SmartTrip card. Participants can take the pledge at carfreemetrodc.org/pledge-page.
Registrants will receive a Capital Bikeshare 24-hour regional pass for unlimited 45-minute rides for the day.
