The annual Bike to Work Day in the D.C. region takes place Friday, May 19. The Metropolitan Council of Government’s Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association are co-organizers of the event in our region. Nationally, Bike to Work Day takes place on the third Friday of May each year.
The county’s transportation department, a member of Commuter Connections, encourages residents to participate to promote bicycling as a clean, fun, and healthy way to get to work.
For residents who do not have a bike, but want to participate, Capital Bikeshare is offering unlimited 45-minute classic rides, and discounts on e-bikes, for the event with the code. Riders need to use the code CABI23BTWD. On Friday, participants can go to “Ride Plans” in the Bikeshare app, tap “Day Pass” and enter the code.
More than 100 pit stops will be set up across the region – 14 in Montgomery County. Here is a map of pit stops.
Bikers may register at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org. All registrants will be entered into a regional bicycle raffle, and the first 15,000 to register and attend at a pit stop will receive a free T-shirt and be entered into a raffle to win a new bike.
The county’s transportation department sponsors seven pit stops, where there will be refreshments, music, and local vendor displays. There will be free raffle prizes throughout the morning and a grand prize raffle of a new bike at each county-sponsored pit stop. Teleworkers and leisure riders are encouraged to participate.
There are many benefits to bicycling to work. It's healthy, quiet, clean, economical and fun way to get to work. #DYK thousands of DC area #commuters #biketowork every day. @BikeToWorkDay is a great day to give it a try!
