Fugitive Wanted for 1997 Shooting in Silver Spring Arrested in El Salvador, Extradited to Montgomery County

Jose Mauricio Rivera, who was wanted for a 1997 shooting in Silver Spring of his then-estranged wife, was arrested in El Salvador.

According to Montgomery County Police, the 58-year-old fugitive has been on the run for more than 27 years but was arrested with assistance from the FBI Baltimore Field Office, El Salvador national Police and Interpol

He was wanted on charges of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault and was extradited to Montgomery County Thursday. He is accused of shooting her multiple times on Oct. 9, 1997.

According to police, Rivera allegedly confronted his then estranged wife in the elevator of her apartment building in the 8100 block of Eastern Avenue in Silver Spring soon after the couple had separated following allegations of abuse. The victim had obtained a restraining order against Rivera.

Interpol El Salvador located and arrested Rivera in April of 2023. He has been in custody since then.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2025.
