The city of Gaithersburg received $1 million in federal funding for its expansive multi-faceted project to update Russell Avenue and the surrounding area.
The project reimagines the area with improved public and pedestrian transportation, green spaces and increased economic activity.
Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman said in a press release the money would go towards updating Russell Avenue from a wide four lane road to “a pedestrian-friendly corridor.”
Plans currently include updating the connection between Olde Towne Gaithersburg and Russell Avenue, new mixed-use development, a new Flash Bus Rapid Transit route, expansion of the county transit center and a park boulevard to bring economic activity to Odendhal and Montgomery Village Avenues.
The plan is designed to increase safety for residents and meet state climate goals. The project envisions a more pedestrian oriented area.
“All Marylanders deserve accessible communities, and this transportation investment will make neighborhoods in Gaithersburg safer and more walkable,” said Sen. Ben Cardin in a press release.
Democratic Maryland members of Congress Sen. Cardin, Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. David Trone all worked together to request and secure the money within federal fiscal year 2024 funding bills.
“With this direct federal investment, Gaithersburg can enhance connectivity, accessibility, and the overall quality of life for the community,” said Senator Chris Van Hollen in a press release.
