Gaithersburg Man Charged with Negligent Manslaughter by Vehicle

Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez of Gaithersburg was charged with negligent manslaughter by vehicle in connection with a fatal collision July 20 on North Frederick Avenue.

Jaramillo Lopez, 45, was traveling northbound on North Frederick Avenue at almost 100 miles per hour when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima being driven by Isaac Akomanyi, 39, of Germantown, according to Montgomery County Police. Lopez was driving a black Ram 1500 pick-up truck.

Akomanyi had just turned right from the parking lot at 18701 North Frederick Avenue, and the collision caused both vehicles to leave the road and hit a tree, police said.

Akomanyi was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Jaramillo Lopez and a passenger in the Nissan were taken to the hospital suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, Jaramillo Lopez reached a top speed of 98.2 miles per hour in a 40-mile per hour zone and struck the Nissan while traveling at 79.5 miles per hour. His blood alcohol content was 0.159 one hour after the collision, which is nearly twice the legal limit, police said.

The fatal crash occurred at 10:12 p.m. near Travis Avenue.

Jaramillo Lopez is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. He previously pled guilty to driving a vehicle in excess of reasonable and prudent speed in Washington County.
