Gaithersburg Police Officer Carissa Fortin’s efforts at a domestic abuse incident this summer earned her the department’s Life Saving Award.
Fortin, a 5-year-veteran, “demonstrated a calm and decisive officer as she responded to a call for service on July 30, 2023,” according to police.
She responded to what was first described as a shooting incident in the 200 block of Muddy Branch Road. When she got there, Fortin found an adult female who had jumped out of a moving vehicle and her arm was caught under the vehicle, resulting in a severe laceration to her forearm and uncontrolled bleeding.
The officer applied a tourniquet as she strove to calm the woman. Fortin then applied a second tourniquet, which did stop the bleeding, according to police.
“Officer Fortin’s quick response and commitment to the preservation of life is a testament to not only Officer Fortin, but all our officers,” said Chief of Police Mark P. Sroka. “Officer Fortin’s actions exemplify the highest standards of service and compassion, and I am proud to present her the Life-Saving Award.”
Fortin was formally recognized by Gaithersburg’s mayor and councilmembers Monday.
The award is given to officers who display bravery and resourcefulness in critical situations, showcasing the unwavering commitment of law enforcement officers to safeguarding the lives of others, according to police.
Join us in congratulating Ofc Fortin for receiving the Lifesaving Award for her heroic actions on July 30.
