Gaithersburg resident Jonathan Powell is the newest WSSC Water commissioner. He was appointed to represent Montgomery County by Executive Marc Elrich and approved Tuesday by members of the County Council.
He previously served on the County’s Energy and Air Quality Advisory Committee and its Revenue Authority.
Powell is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he majored in systems engineering. Before joining the Navy, he was a project manager at General Dynamics from 2017 to 2021. He also worked at CACI International, Inc. and IBM.
Upon graduating from the Naval Academy, he served as a Submarine Officer in the Navy from 1994 to 2001, receiving several commendations for his service.
He has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Maryland and a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University.
Council President Andrew Friedson praised Powell for having “the type of talent and professional background that we are so lucky to have in Montgomery County.”
Powell assured Councilmembers, “I am up to the challenge.”
Powell replaces Howard Denis, former State Senator and Council member, who has served since January of 2016.
