Gaithersburg wants to help residents dispose less and fix more.
The city’s Environmental Affairs Committee will host a Fix-It Fair on June 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents can schedule an appointment and bring items like bikes and toasters and get them repaired at no cost, according to the city’s website.
“The “right to repair” and the ability to fix material is crucial to transitioning away from a disposal society,” the event listing said. “Fixers are key to saving useful materials from landfills.”
The event will be held in the Casey Community Center at 810 South Frederick Ave. Gaithersburg said last year’s fair had 41 appointments with a successful diagnosis rate of 99%.
Gaithersburg is recruiting volunteers with repair experience to take appointments at the event. The city is searching for volunteers skilled in repairing items like small appliances, bikes and jewelry, and will welcome those with other experience.
Those interested in volunteering should email environment@gaithersburgmd.gov by March 18, and include areas of experience and samples of success. Learn more about the event here.
