A Gaithersburg woman ended up with two $100,000 third-tier winning tickets thanks to an error.
According to Maryland Lottery officials, the woman, who was new to Powerball, accepted a ticket with the wrong number on it.
The woman, who goes by the nickname Feedie, purchased two tickets at the Giant on Goshen Road in Gaithersburg and two more tickets from Goshen Plaza Beer and Wine in Montgomery Village.
The retailer at the beer and wine story hit the wrong key for her $20 ticket for the April 10 drawing. That ticket, like the ones she purchased at the Giant, also included the Power Play and Double Play features.
Feedie told the cashier not to worry, she would purchase the ticket anyway, according to Maryland Lottery officials.
A few days later, Feedie’s daughter reminded her to check her tickets on the Maryland Lottery app. She checked the first ticket and saw that the Power Play multiplier had doubled her third-tier prize to $100,000. Her second and third tickets didn’t win anything.
But the fourth one – the one the cashier had mistyped – also came up as a third-tier winner with the prize doubled to $100,000, for a winning total of $200,000.
“I scanned my winners about 10 to 12 times because I really couldn’t believe I had won that much money on my second time playing,” she told lottery officials. “I felt my body shaking, I dropped to my knees and thanked God.”
Feedie, who has kept her winnings a secret from everyone but her daughter and mother, also said, “I guess I am a lucky woman, my mother used to tell me that.” She added, “It finally feels like it today.”
Her current plans are to save or invest her winnings.
