The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) awarded the Gaithersburg Community Museum this year’s Miller History Fund grant. The Museum received the $20,000 grant through the nonprofit Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation. The nonprofit supports local arts and recreation initiatives.
The grant supports the second phase of the Gaithersburg History Project, focusing on researching and documenting the history of Latine Gaithersburg, a demographic comprising approximately 29 percent of the city’s population. The ongoing project aims to preserve and share community stories, including contributions, challenges, dreams, and daily life experiences, providing a more comprehensive history of Gaithersburg.
“We’re delighted that the Miller History Fund has put its faith in our work.”, said Cynthia Cowan, the Community Museum Manager. “Its support will allow us to expand this phase of the Gaithersburg History Project in many meaningful ways.”
The Miller History Fund, renamed in 2021 in honor of late Senate President Emeritus Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr., is made possible by an annually recurring allocation from the State’s Preservation of Cultural Arts Fund. Over five years, the grant program has invested a total of $1,000,000 to 53 historical organizations throughout Maryland.
The fund aims to assist organizations to preserve historical collections and make them accessible and relevant to the public. This year, grant recipients include organizations in six counties.
