There were no injuries when an apparent gas leak caused an explosion and set a house in the 400 block of Byrd Road in Kensington on fire Thursday afternoon.
All occupants and a cat got out of the home safely, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS).
Smoke and flames could be seen coming from the single-family home, according to MCFRS. First responders reported that there appeared to be a gas fed fire involving a gas meter and an electric meter.
Representatives from both Pepco and Washington Gas were on the scene and secured the utilities.
As emergency workers put the fire out, the temperatures in the area soared to 99 degrees.
