Georgetown Prep Alum McCarthy Will Play in Wells Fargo Event at Avenel

Georgetown Prep and University of Virginia alum Denny McCarthy will play in the Wells Fargo Championship to be played May 5-8 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm MyMCMedia has learned. McCarthy will officially commit in the coming days. Players have until 5:00 p.m. Eastern on April 29 to commit to the 156-player field.

McCarthy, born in Takoma Park, is currently 54th in the FedExCup rankings. In his fifth full year on Tour, he has 12 career top 10 finishes, over $5,000,000 in earnings and is seeking his first victory.

On Thursday, several major champions committed to play at the Wells Fargo event.

Jason Day, the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship and 2015 PGA Championship winner is joined by Gary Woodland (2019 U.S. Open), Webb Simpson (2012 U.S. Open), Louis Oosthuizen (2010 Open Championship), Charl Schwartzel (2011 Masters) and U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Zach Johnson (2007 Masters, 2015 Open Championship). Collectively, this group has 33 career PGA Tour victories.

In addition, World No.12 and four-time Tour winner Xander Schauffele and Mexico’s top-ranked player, winner of the 2021 WGC—FedEx St. Jude Invitational and World No.18 Abraham Ancer are committed. South Africa’s Oosthuizen, who has finished runner-up in all four majors in addition to winning one, is ranked 14th in the world.

Previously Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler committed to play in Potomac.

The Wells Fargo Championship will be held at TPC Potomac for one year while the tournament’s permanent home, Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte NC, prepares to host the 2022 Presidents Cup.
