A global satellite technology company has opened a new center in Rockville.
Intellian Technologies announced a $100 million investment into satellite communication technology research and development during the official opening of the Advanced Development Center, according to a release from the company on Wednesday.
It is Intellian’s first and only research and development center based in the United States.
“Growing to a team of over 70 by Q4 2023, this investment will boost economic growth and foster innovation within the state of Maryland and locally in Montgomery County,” according to the release. “Developments in satellite technology are making satellite networks far more competitive than ever before and are opening the door to truly global, high bandwidth coverage for everyone.”
County Executive Marc Elrich said Intellian plans to use the new location to design products that will enhance its satellite communications presence. The company is a leading global provider of satellite user terminals and sells to the government and private sector, Elrich said.
“For example, one of the biggest uses of their products are the leisure fleets of the large cruise ships, where they are able to beam internet and other services to the ships at sea,” Elrich said during a media briefing Wednesday.
The Advanced Development Center is located at 2600 Tower Oaks Boulevard, according to Intellian’s website.
The company announced the opening in March, per a previous release.
