Montgomery County native and Good Counsel High School alum (Class of 2011) Phylicia Pearl Mpasi stars in the recently released movie revival of The Color Purple. Mpasi plays young Celie, a role originated by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1985 Oscar-nominated movie based on the novel of the same name written by Alice Walker. Mpasi initially auditioned for the role of the older Celie but that went to Fantasia Barrino.
This adaptation of the movie is a musical produced by Steven Spielberg (who directed the 1985 movie), Quincy Jones (who co-produced the original movie) and Oprah Winfrey (who starred in the original movie).
Mpasi is the daughter of Congolese parents. She received a theater scholarship to attend Good Counsel then attended Elon University studying musical theater. Just before graduating, she was cast in the national tour of The Lion King.
Last week, Mpasi hosted a private screening of The Color Purple in Germantown.
