Gov. Wes Moore toured Xometry in Gaithersburg Friday to emphasize his commitment to growing manufacturing in Maryland.
“I like seeing what success looks like. We like celebrating success,” Moore declared, noting that since he became governor, 111,000 manufacturing jobs were added and more than $28 million in GDP came to the state.
Xometry takes scanned designs and, using its 3-D printers, builds the items to the exact specification. The company is headquartered in North Bethesda and does its manufacturing in Gaithersburg.
To showcase its efforts, the company recently has created precise 3-D images of Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, Comptroller Brooke Lierman and the D.C. United’s mascot, Talon. The figures first were scanned by Baltimore-based Direct Dimensions.
Xometry also makes tools and other equipment.
“Manufacturing is high tech, and high tech is manufacturing, and it is happening here right here in Maryland,” Randy Altschuler, CEO of Xometry declared. He thanked Moore for his “unwavering support.”
Moore called manufacturing “a key and an important industry in our state and in our county.” He was met with much applause when he added, “We are just getting started.”
He added, “For a person with a big idea, there is no better place to call home than the state of Maryland.”
Both Altschuler, and Sophia MacDonald, Xometry’s Chief People Officer, stressed a need for more workers, especially women and people of color.
Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman was excited Moore came to Xometry. “It’s great. It’s an honor to have the Governor here. I really like the energy he’s putting forth supporting business in Maryland.”
