Gov. Wes Moore announced more than $100 million in local grants to expand access to outdoor space and recreation on Monday.
The grants from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will help the state conserve outdoor land and provide space for residents to participate in outdoor recreation, according to a press release from Moore.
“Through the preservation of our natural resources and promotion of outdoor recreation, we are also ensuring that Marylanders will enjoy public spaces for generations to come,” Moore said in the release.
The $100 million is part of Maryland’s Program Open Space and Community Parks & Playgrounds Program.
“Program Open Space and Community Parks & Playgrounds are two tremendously successful programs that allow us to partner with our communities and help provide outdoor spaces and activities close to where every Marylander lives,” Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz said in the release.
Jurisdictions can now submit applications to the Board of Public Works to receive part of the grant money for their individual projects.
Moore also announced that Montgomery County received $376,471 in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget for the creation of Yeandle Park in the Town of Garrett Park and to expand Dillingham Skatepark in the Town of Poolesville.
