Hallie Wells Student Named Merit Winner in Young Scientist Challenge

Sathvik Dasari, a student at Hallie Wells Middle School in Clarksburg, is the Maryland merit winner in the 3M and Discovery Education 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Students in grades fifth through eighth submitted a one-to-two-minute video explaining their idea of how to use science to help solve an everyday problem.

Dasari’s project dealt with monitoring air pollution levels using autonomous drones with integrated sensors and machine learning technology. The middle school student’s drone was equipped with gas sensors and particulate matter detectors,

The goal was to identify pollution hotspots, unsafe areas, temporal trends, spatial patters and hazardous chemicals in the air.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge nurtures student curiosity by challenging them to think big and innovate for a better world,” said Amy Nakamoto, Executive Vice President of Social Impact at Discovery Education. “We are excited to support this effort to demonstrate students’ ability to use science to create a better world.”
