‘HERtime2shine’ Event Gives Girls Opportunity to Try Different Sports

The Montgomery County Recreation Department is hosting a special event Sunday, March 27 that will provide an opportunity for girls to experience different sports such as futsal, basketball, and volleyball at the White Oak Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring. The event takes place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and is free for girls in elementary, middle and high school.

On Tuesday, the County Council made a special appropriation of $100,000 to the Department of Recreation to expand sports programs for girls in the county. The event Sunday, titled “HERtime2shine,” celebrates that investment and will include sports workshops, activities and games like volleyball, futsal and speed and agility for children of all ages and abilities. There will also be demonstrations of the different sports by local coaches and staff, games for all ages, giveaways, healthy snacks and more.

Council President Gabe Albornoz and Councilmember Hans Riemer also introduced legislation on Tuesday, March 15 to establish a sports commission, an organizing body that will work to identify and address discrepancies in youth sports in the county.

Albornoz talked about the purpose of the commission:
