Montgomery County Board of Education members voted Tuesday to spend $2 million to purchase and install vape detectors in high schools.
According to a Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) staff report, “As a result of ongoing serious incidents within MCPS,” it is recommended that these detection systems be set up in all high schools, particularly in restrooms.
The idea is to ensure a healthier and safer school environment, according to the report.
MCPS received funding from the JUUL settlement and will use that money to purchase and install the vape detectors.
For the district to proceed, members of the county council must approve the expenditure.
