Hijab Incident at Clarksburg School Resolved

Late last month MCM received a news submission regarding an incident at a Clarksburg school. In the email the writer wanted to know the outcome when an 8-year-old girl was told by a teacher she could not wear a hijab in class.

According to the blog Rockville Nights, CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, helped resolve the situation.

The director of CAIR Maryland, Zainab Chaudry, told MCM that after a confrontation and comments by the teacher at school the parents reached out to the principal but received no response.

That’s when they contacted CAIR and revealed their daughter was experiencing anxiety and physical symptoms due to interactions with the teacher.

CAIR began an investigation into the incidents and say they filed a report to the “top level” at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Subsequently, the 3rd grader was moved to another class, the teacher was removed and told to have no further contact with the student.

Citing privacy the parents chose not to speak with MCM.

MCM contacted MCPS about the situation. They replied it was a personnel matter, and they were not able to comment.

CAIR describes itself as America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization.
