On Friday, Gov. Larry Hogan signed emergency legislation to suspend the gas tax in Maryland for 30 days.
During a press conference ahead of the signing, Hogan said the move “makes Maryland the first state in the nation to immediately suspend collection of the gas tax.”
Gas prices have surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This month, the national and state average prices for gas broke records previously set in 2008, according to AAA.
Both the House and Senate passed the legislation.
“As we continue to stand in solidarity against Russian aggression in Ukraine, and as Marylanders face the impact of surging inflation — with the average price of gas rapidly rising, this bipartisan action will provide some relief from the pain at the pump,” Hogan said.
He noted the measure is not a “cure-all” and prices will continue to fluctuate.
