Roy McGrath, one time chief of staff for former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who was wanted by federal authorities, has died following an FBI-involved shooting on Monday, according to the agency.
The FBI is reviewing an agent-involved shooting that happened at about 6:30 p.m., per a statement from an FBI spokesperson.
“During the arrest the subject, Roy McGrath, sustained injury and was transported to the hospital,” part of the statement reads. McGrath succumbed to his injuries.
The FBI reviews every shooting involving a special agent.
It occurred in Tennessee, according to multiple news reports.
McGrath faced charges of wire fraud and falsification of records, among other charges. According to the Justice Department, McGrath allegedly fraudulently obtained a severance payment and allegedly secretly recorded private conversations with state officials.
He was the Executive Director of the Maryland Environmental Service (MES) before he left to become Hogan’s chief of staff in 2020. He resigned when it was revealed he accepted a $230,000 severance package from MES, according to The Washington Post.
McGrath was wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service and the FBI after he failed to appear in court last month. The agencies each offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to McGrath’s arrest, calling him a “fugitive.”
He faced up to 20 years for each of four counts of wire fraud if convicted on the federal charges, per the Justice Department. He also faced up to 10 years for each of two counts of embezzling funds.
