Montgomery County hosts a homeless resource day on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Activity Center in Gaithersburg. The event, known as the Nadim Khan Memorial Homeless Resource Day, is a one-day, one-stop opportunity for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness to access services, resources and information.
County officials will attend to observe first-hand the variety of programs and services offered for residents experiencing homelessness. More than 60 organizations will offer a range of resources, including free medical screenings, legal services, financial counseling, tax assistance, substance use and mental health counseling and social services. Also, more than 300 volunteers will assist attendees to navigate the range of resources.
Free haircuts and chair massages will be offered and attendees can learn about housing and employment opportunities. Assistance will be available to help attendees apply for Motor Vehicle Administration identification cards. Transportation will be provided from the Bethesda, Rockville, Shady Grove and Silver Spring metro stations. Bi-lingual guides and sign language interpreters will be available to assist attendees.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) counts the homeless population in the region annually. There were 894 homeless individuals in Montgomery County in January 2023 according to the MWCOG count.
Nadim A. Khan, former Chief of Special Needs Housing spearheaded the event. In 2017, the county renamed the event to honor Khan for his strong advocacy and leadership in the field of homelessness.
