House, Garden Tour Benefits Scotland AME Church’s Renovations

Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage of Montgomery County announced that 10 homes and gardens will be open May 18.

This is the 94th year the tour is being held. It tuns from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets for the tour proceeds benefit Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Church on Seven Locks Road in Potomac.

The 100-year-old church structure is being repaired and expanded after a 2019 flood. “We think tour goers will be truly impressed by the lineup of truly amazing destinations that our organizing team has put together,” said Bernard Scott, event co-chairperson.

Many of the properties selected date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, including the Milton Loughborough House in Bethesda. The former tavern and stagecoach stop was built circa 1700 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975.

The tour also includes Glenstone Museum, opened in 2006, and the Signal Tree House, an 18-year-old replica of a centuries-old Italian villa.

“Having seen all of the properties personally, I can say that the Signal Tree House is truly magnificent,” said Scott. “The home has been in many magazines through the years and was featured in the Washington Post just this past weekend.”

A home-cooked fried-chicken luncheon can be purchased at the Bette Carol Thompson Neighborhood Recreation Center, 7700 Scotland Drive, for a $20 donation.

Tickets can be purchased at Good Earth Garden Market, 11650 Falls Road, Potomac or online.
