On Wednesday, Maryland House of Delegates Speaker Adrienne A. Jones announced changes in House leadership, including appointing two Montgomery County officials to top positions.
Delegate David Mood (D-20) was appointed as the House Majority Leader, the third most powerful position in the Maryland House of Delegates. In this role, Del. Moon will lead the debate for the Democratic Party on the House floor.
“When I first ran for office almost a decade ago (yikes) I never dreamed of being entrusted with the responsibility of speaking for one of the largest Democratic majorities in the modern era,” wrote Del. Moon on social media.
“David is a proven leader in the House and a natural fit for House Majority Leader,” said Speaker Jones. “He has led the debate on some on some of the most contentious issue we had faced and been a powerful consensus builder in the House.”
With this new position, Del. Moon will leave his role as vice-chair of the House Judiciary Committee and Del. Sandy Bartlette (D-Anne Arundel) will take over.
Also announced, former House Majority Leader Marc Korman (D) will become the new chair of the Environment and Transportation Committee. This move. comes after the committee chair since 2015, Del. Kumar Barve’s (D- Montgomery County) announced he is leaving the legislature after being nominated to serve on the Maryland Public Service Commission. Gov. Moore will fill Barve’s position in the General Assembly after a recommendation from the county’s Democratic Central Committee.
“Marc has distinguished himself as Majority Leader and is a nationally recognized transportation policy expert,” Jones said in a written statement. “He will bring his considerable talents and energy to the committee.”
Delegate Jared Solomon (D-Montgomery County) also was appointed as chair of the House Appropriations Personnel Subcommittee. When the General Assembly reconvenes for its regular session in January, the speaker intends to nominate a new speaker pro term.
