How Montgomery County Voted: Key Races and Ballot Measures

Montgomery County voters made their voices heard in the 2024 general election, casting ballots in races from the presidential contest to key seats in Congress and the U.S. Senate.

Kamala Harris won Montgomery County handily, securing 73% of the vote. Donald Trump – whoo projected as the winner in the early morning hours – received just under a quarter of the county’s votes.

In the U.S. Senate race, Angela Alsobrooks defeated former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to fill the seat vacated by retiring Senator Ben Cardin, who had held the office since 2007. Alsobrooks won 64% of the county’s vote, while a little more than one-third of voters supported Hogan. Her victory makes her Maryland’s first Black senator and only the fourth Black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Montgomery County includes portions of three congressional districts. In District 4, Glenn Ivey received over 10,000 of the 12,903 votes cast from county residents.. The District 6 race between April McClain Delaney and Neil Parrott remains too close to call, with county voters favoring Delaney 69% to Parrott’s 30%.

Jamie Raskin easily won re-election in District 8, capturing 75% of the vote to Cheryl Riley’s 21% in the County.

All three school board candidates endorsed by the Montgomery County Education Association won their races. Rita Montoya earned 53% of the vote in the At-Large race. Natalie Zimmerman won the District 2 seat with 55%, or 174,578 votes. Laura Stewart received 57% of votes in the District 4 race.

Montgomery County voters also weighed in on two ballot questions. A statewide constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom received nearly 81% approval. A county charter amendment to modify term limits for the County Executive from three to two terms passed with 68% of the vote.

Canvassing for remaining mail-in ballots resumes Thursday, Nov. 7, with provisional ballot canvassing set to begin Wednesday, Nov. 13.
