So far this summer in Montgomery County, there have been two major deck collapses. One in Germantown where six people were hospitalized and another in Rockville where two people were hospitalized.
MyMCM spoke to Jeremy Shupp, the program manager for Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services, about how to know if your deck is due for maintenance:
Every May, to celebrate Building Safety Month, Montgomery County DPS offers free deck inspections to residents in Montgomery County. Most of their inspection is visual, so you don’t need to be a professional to know if your deck needs repairs. Here is the checklist DPS uses to inspect decks.
Check your Deck – DYK @MontgomeryCoMD 95% of the residential deck collapses (there been a few) @mcfrs respond to occur because of a failure of some sort at point where deck meets the house or what is commonly known as the ledger See: checklist .➡️ https://t.co/MYJQWcLwiP pic.twitter.com/jJ0ZgJK3z1
