After a turbulent year for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), the race for Board of Education seats promised to be very interesting especially for incumbents.
As of 5 a.m. with 255 of 257 precincts counted and many more mail in ballots still to be counted, in the At-Large race, incumbent Lynne Harris (31.07%) holds a slim margin (21 total votes) over Rita Montoya (31.05%) with Melissa Kim (15.45%) in third place.
Harris was elected to her first four-year term in November 2020.
In District 2, Natalie Zimmerman (46.11%) is way out in front followed by Brenda M. Diaz (22.28%) and incumbent Rebecca Smondrowski (16.87%). Smondrowski is in her third four-year term.
In District 4, Laura Stewart (47.30%) holds a sizable lead over incumbent Shebra Evans (26.94%) and Bethany Mandel (25.76%). Evans in serving her second four-year term.
Zimmerman, Montoya and Stewart received the support of the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA).
In each of the three Board of Education races, the top two vote getters advance to the general election on November 5.
